An excerpt from "Your Foal: Essential Training for the Young Horse":

It's important for you to be cognizant of how he turns his body. How he turns his body tells you what's happening in that brain. Granted, you won't see big changes here with a young horse, it'll be far more pronounced in the older ones. Still, it's closely related to yesterday's "Is he relaxed or not" lesson and something to start being on the lookout for. If you ask him to bring his head to the side and, instead of relaxing his neck and "flowing through," he turns his hips and entire body away, rock solid and stiff like a 2x4, that marks a certain amount of resistance or nervousness. Ideally, he will begin to relax that neck and flow through his turn, bending through the middle of his body like a giant snake. Again, you may not spot that much fluidity here today, but be on the lookout for it as your horse matures and continues his training. It marks a bonding and is a sign that your training is taking hold.

After your horse has been introduced to giving to pressure, we're ready to move on. Position him near the wall of your pen, stand back a good ten feet or so and press him to walk ahead. You should stay equi-distant behind him as he walks, by roughly 10 feet.
