Foal Training Explained: The First Two Years
Mare owners, if you'd like to get your colt or filly started out with a proper foundation, I would suggest the investment of $5.99 in my foal-training course.

An excerpt from "Your Foal: Essential Training for the Young Horse":
The next step is to get him moving again, but this time, allow him to go a few feet, then pick up the line, ask for him to tip his head ("giving to the line") but insist that he keep moving. He'll want to stop because that is what's been handing him a release from our pressure until now, but you need to press him to walk on (with a wave of your hands or a flick of your whip, smack your leg, etc.) If you've completed the initial work (where you simply stood there and took the slack out of the line till he looked at you), this will not be all that new a concept for the foal. (If you think about it, this is exactly what a horse that's being ridden and won't stop, despite the pressure on the reins, is NOT doing. We're teaching our baby right here, from the safety of the ground, to give to the pressure of the bit and to not run us both off that cliff.)
