Foal Training Explained: The First Two Years
Mare owners, if you'd like to get your colt or filly started out with a proper foundation, I would suggest the investment of $5.99 in my foal-training course.

An excerpt from "Your Foal: Essential Training for the Young Horse":
As you're walking there alongside the horse, very gradually turn in slightly toward the center. If the horse dutifully keeps the slack in the rope (or gives to it as he's been taught), he'll follow alongside you. At first you'll want to "flow" around the pen, keeping the horse moving, occasionally cutting in toward the center, asking your colt to follow along. Concentrate on asking the horse to "work on less," meaning that you want to consciously cause him to follow not your pull, but your body language. Challenge yourself to always keep some slack (an actual droop) in the lead line. (Easy to do if you keep turning to the hips to add drive, rather than pulling on the lead.) That droop will serve as your proof that your horse is learning to work off your body language and not being coerced. Almost without realizing it, the two of you will soon be walking straight.
