Foal Training Explained: The First Two Years
Mare owners, if you'd like to get your colt or filly started out with a proper foundation, I would suggest the investment of $5.99 in my foal-training course.

An excerpt from "Your Foal: Essential Training for the Young Horse":
Tap your horse lightly, very lightly with the dressage whip on the rump. It's important to follow a rhythm, 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3. It keeps you objective and following a protocol – as opposed to wiggin' out and smacking the devil out of them. It also teaches the horse that A is followed by B, B is followed by C: "If I ignore him when he kisses at me, he'll start up with that darn whip. I'll go ahead and move. Resistance is futile." If he's still parked out after ten or fifteen seconds, add a little more pressure with your tapping. Still nothing? Add still more. I build up to "really irritating" (as opposed to painful, actual whipping) and stay with it till I get movement. (There are a few horses with the ability to get that back leg on their opposite side clear up to your chest at the speed of light. I've run across two such horses and this is why I max out my whip pressure at "irritating," staying well shy of an actual crack across the buttocks.)
