Foal Training Explained: The First Two Years

An excerpt from "Your Foal: Essential Training for the Young Horse":
Next, increase your pressure and work your way to the rest of the foal. Start by aiming the hose along the ground, bringing it to your horse's hoof, then away, then back farther up his leg, then away, etc. Advance, retreat, advance, retreat. Or, crimp the hose in your hand, killing most of the pressure; hold it to his shoulder and gradually unfold the hose. Think of this from his perspective: When he's hit by cold water, he's going to assume it's a forever thing and try to move away from it. (Just as when a saddle is first strapped to his back.) You may realize it'll only last a moment – but he has no way of knowing that and will react accordingly, shying from the water, bucking at the saddle. Help him understand that being hosed down is a temporary event by advancing, retreating, advancing, retreating. More often than not, when they relax just long enough to actually "feel" the water, they'll realize it feels good and simply stand there. Note that, just like humans, horses can be rather sensitive about being hit with cold water in their, uh, nether-regions, so go easy there. When it comes time to soap the naughty bits, be ginger and keep an eye on your horse's attitude. (Cocked ears or back legs mean back off and go slower.) This is when you'll find out clearly whether you've spent enough time desensitizing between those back legs and under the hood so' to speak.
