Foal Training Explained: The First Two Years
Mare owners, if you'd like to get your colt or filly started out with a proper foundation, I would suggest the investment of $5.99 in my foal-training course.

An excerpt from "Your Foal: Essential Training for the Young Horse":
Okay, now the foal's head. Take a sponge, get it slightly wet and rub your horse's head with it. The dripping will cause some flinching, but work through it. Using a sponge to accustom him to water over his head is much easier than fighting with an unwieldy hose. You've only got water on the sponge (no soap), so you can rub over the eyes and around the ears, the muzzle, under and over. Remember when you first begin to start and stop, pause a quick beat; start and stop, pause a beat. Also, while you should make a special effort to work those ears back and forth, be careful not to cause water to drip unnecessarily down his ears. After all, they're really just great holes on the top of his head – having water poured in there couldn't be all that pleasant. When you spritz the ears/head later with the hose, he has the opportunity to fold his ears back and therefore protect himself. He's not afforded that protection with the sponge. This is another time when I'll add a stutter step with the nervous horse by putting water first in my palm and rubbing the horse's head with my hand. He'll accept the sponge then quickly and you can go from there.
