If you're a bit rusty on teaching a horse to lunge, I'll "postscript" today's material with the following quick how-to: Whether you're first teaching a youngster to lunge - or giving some remedial training to an older horse prone to spin at Mach 6, you'll begin in the same way. You'll begin where you do have control and that's "near the horse." It does little good to "start with our goal" of having the horse run around a bigger circle if we know we're going to lose control sometime after he moves away. To remedy this, clip a lunge line on to your horse's halter and take the line in your left hand several inches below the horse's chin; hold a dressage whip in your right. (We'll use "to the left" in this example; obviously you can simply reverse things later. Tip: You'll find your horse will "soften up" quicker if you move from one side to the other often.) Use the go forward cue you practiced back on Day One and ask the horse to move around you in a tight circle. As on Day One, we want to build in a system of pre-cues ("I raise my right hand."), cues ("I kiss") and motivators("I tap and keep annoying you until you move.") so it remains critical that you follow a pattern and always begin with the least amount of pressure "you want it to ever take" to get your horse to move off. If the horse begins to back up, move his hips immediately to halt him, reposition yourself and begin asking again for him to circle using your go-forward cue. He’ll likely confused at some point and start backing away from you. You must resist the temptation to just follow him as he backs, trying to get him to stop and go forward - this can go from bad to much worse as the horse grows increasingly nervous - and you get more angry. Nope, if he backs, move his hips over to stop him, start again. You’ll want to trust me here.
